The Class of 2017 techniques In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a bit that is little again to have food. Publications are being purchased. Tools are put away and summer time construction has dwindled down (well, nearly all of it). Cars filled up with boxes of clothes and school materials are increasingly being directed around campus to residential halls. Going carts, student ID cards, and last second trips to Target; folks, it’s officially Move-In time.
I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Often I forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future international leaders. We found myself simply using it all in while smiling at students and parents I have never met before. ( It may were just a little weird, but hey, I happened to be caught in an instant). Suddenly, I desired to travel back in time, get back in to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as these were entering their dorms for the very first time. Subsequently, I sensed an amount that is great of and a bit of hesitation from moms and dads as they struggled to allow their young ones go. It is obvious that this moment is just a milestone in most of these lives. Students look forward to their next four years at USC and wonder at all the opportunities it could bring, while parents feel a feeling of accomplishment simply because they were somewhat accountable for getting their kids to college. With all of these emotions swirling on campus, i will realise why there were so hugs https://shmoop.pro/ that are many around.
through the welcome convocation today, speakers endured in front for the incoming course of 2017 and offered suggestions about how to take advantage of their time only at USC. I want to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife university, stated during her speech: be there. It’s not as easy as it appears but you would have been a better individual being the sooner you’ll practice it in your very own life. To the brand new incoming freshmen at USC and current students; I challenge you to be present. Show up in your classes. Be present in your conversations. Be present when you do your research. Be present whenever you’re meeting new people. Be current whenever you write your personal statements. Be present when you study for the AP/IB tests. Be present when the tests are taken by you. Be there when you ask her/him down. Be present in conflict. Be contained in new challenges. Be contained in all of your new experiences and activities. Take it all in. Be current!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play a crucial role in the college process that is entire. Often times, moms and dads help subsidize some, if not all, of attending a college or university, and are always there to inquire of those specific ‘parent’ questions you need to ask the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was? that you as students can’t be bothered with (really mom, did)

Nevertheless, there are instances where moms and dads must take a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to ask the difficult questions. Here, we now have a compiled a listing of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting during the college application and search process:

Do help your son or daughter determine what they want for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. Finding a good fit for your specific wants and needs is more important than the cachet of the name.

do not gather all the information for them! Allow them to contact admission counselors and find out the appropriate information for themselves. After all, they’ll be in college somewhere quickly enough, which is important they learn to navigate the procedure themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to check out college campuses, and have them on those tours! The way that is best to get acquainted with a college or university is make the stop by at campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus trips, interviews, receptions, etc. Allow them do so! This shows us that they are mature and independent.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not receiving directly into their first choice school might seem such as the end of this world at that moment, but that things work out and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains at the top of these list even with enrolling someplace else.

Don’t fill down their applications for them! We can tell also it reflects poorly on the applicant. We realize that these are teenagers using and expect their applications to convey their true sound and style.

So the moral is: find a balance. Realize that your child is about to embark on a life-changing journey and that beginning to take ownership of the college application procedure is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured if they involve where to send the care package that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ questions, even.
